Grounded - Jeanine Tesori One of the most prolific and respected musical theater composers in the United States, Žanina Tesori, makes her debut on the Metropolitan stage. The Tony Award-winner, who created five highly successful Broadway musicals (and many more), wrote Grounded (based on George Brant's 2012 play of the same name) specifically for the Metropolitan Opera. The play about the female fighter pilot premiered in October 2023 at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., and will open the new Metropolitan season starting on September 23. Talented and fearless fighter pilot Jessie (Canadian mezzo-soprano Emily D'Angelo) is unable to sit at the helm of her beloved F-16 due to an unexpected pregnancy. However, the managers do not want to lose her talent, so they transfer the woman to the drone department. Now, Jesse flies the deadly Reaper drone over Afghanistan from the comfort of an armchair in Las Vegas. Modern opera raises extremely complex questions about 21st century war methods, means, technologies, ethics and inhumane psychological pressure on people who can irreversibly change the destinies of people on the other side of the world with the push of a button.
