Juliette Binoche and Ralph Fiennes, who starred together in the impressive film "The Sick Englishman", which won as many as nine Oscar awards, again reunited after a 25-year hiatus in director Uberto Pasolini's epic and emotional adaptation of Homer's Odyssey, The Return.
20 years after the brutal Trojan War, Odysseus' body is washed up in the sea off the coast of Ithaca. After surviving a bloody battle, losing his best soldiers, and experiencing insane suffering, he reached home completely exhausted, but life still simmered in his veins. The king has returned, but his land is in chaos, treachery and confusion. Odysseus is dead to the people - the country needs a new leader. Penelope, the beloved wife of Odysseus, is pursued by men thirsty for blood and power, seeking to marry her and take over the wealth of the kingdom. The son, Telemachus, whom Odysseus has not seen for many years, has become a mature man, has lost faith in his father, and greedy pretenders to the throne desire his death.
Strong and wise Penelope believes that her husband will return and does not stop waiting for him. Her eyes are alert and her mind is sharp, looking for ways to protect Telemachus.
Returning to Ithaca, Odysseus' heart is torn by grief and pain. Cruel trials on the battlefield, confrontations with powerful gods, senseless deaths hardened his will even more, but crushed his soul, leaving an endless void and darkness. Odysseus chooses solitude to fight his inner demons. Even his people no longer recognize the once valiant, wise and brave warrior. Seeing Penelope's pain, people's greed, poverty and injustice around him, Odysseus has to make a decision - to reveal or lose his identity forever. Finding strength within himself, Odysseus embarks on a fierce battle to protect his family and reclaim his lost love.
The king appears just as Penelope is holding a special test for all who desire her hand.
The emotional story and the enchanting performance of the actors will create an unforgettable cinema experience on the cinema screen, which will allow the audience to see Homer's well-known work "The Odyssey" in a new light.
The film is in English with Lithuanian subtitles.
