Twenty-five years ago, the Earth became uninhabitable after a climate catastrophe. Mother (Tilda Swinton), Father (Michael Shannon) and Son (George MacKay) live in an underground house where they try to maintain hope and a sense of normalcy by following the rituals of everyday life. Their happy everyday life is disturbed by the appearance of an unknown Girl (Moses Ingram). Having never seen the outside world, naive twenty-year-old Son falls in love with a guest, and suddenly the fragile bonds of blind optimism that held the wealthy family together begin to crack. As tensions mount, a seemingly idyllic family life begins to crumble, and long-suppressed guilt and grievances rise to the surface.
Joshua Oppenheimer is a director nominated for two Oscars for his documentaries The Act of Killing and The Look of Silence. Finally, after a ten-year hiatus, his long-awaited acting debut "The End" came out. Although the film tells about the end of the world, its time is unclear. For the director, music has always been an important element of films, so this time he chooses the genre of musicals from the golden age of Hollywood (the music was composed by Marius De Vries, music producer and composer of "California Dreams"), thus erasing not only time, but also the usual rules of "end of the world" films. The End | Directed by Joshua Oppenheimer | Starring Tilda Swinton, Michael Shannon, Moses Ingram, George MacKay, Tim McInnerny, Lennie James, Bronagh Gallagher, Danielle Ryan | Duration 148 min. | Denmark, Ireland, Germany, Italy, Great Britain, USA, Sweden, 2024 | English language, Lithuanian subtitles. | N-13
