Bhutan's agents of happiness roam the Himalayas measuring the happiness of its citizens. There are many questions: how do you feel about karma, when was the last time you cried, how many cows do you have?
In Bhutan, state employees take care to interview as many residents as possible and assess: is the state happy? The content of the survey is a bit unusual for Westerners - among the questions about fullness or agreement with neighbors, there is also a long list in which the respondent scrupulously notes how many cows and radios he owns and how he feels about his karma. Amber, a civil servant who travels to Bhutanese homes, is also looking for personal happiness, but he feels that the chances of starting a family are slipping away. A story about happiness and the question, do we all really want the same thing? Or maybe happiness is different for everyone?

Official happiness agents of Bhutan travel the Himalayas surveying people's happiness: how is your karma, when did you last cry, how many cows do you have?
Agent of Happiness offers a unique take on the notoriously exoticized Bhutan and its unusual happiness policy. We follow Amber as he investigates various expressions of contentment across different households and lifestyles while navigating his own struggle as a Nepali minority. The holistic philosophy at the heart of the survey he conducts challenges the conventional metrics of fulfillment and success, often provoking some deeper soul-searching. The filmmakers elegantly capture many tender moments between Amber and his interlocutors, as well as some very revealing conversations filled with unflinching honesty and quiet wisdom.
