Kaunas Archcathedral Basilica, like the old town of Kaunas, tells us its 600-year history.
This one of the largest Gothic shrines in Lithuania has preserved the features of various eras: it is both modest Gothic on the outside and "dancing" Baroque on the inside.
Bishop Motiejus Valančius jokingly called the cathedral "unicorn cow" (because of one surviving tower).
The beginning of the construction of this sanctuary dates back to 1408, when Kaunas was granted the privilege of Magdeburg self-government.
Well, the baroque interior was "put on" by the sanctuary in 1771, when Stanislaus Poniatovskis, the last king of Poland and Lithuania, gave 40,000 gold foundation for the renovation of the church.
