The Bernardine brothers settled in the donated estates at the confluence of the Nemunas and Nēria rivers, on the outskirts of the city. Behind the unprecedented red brick wall of St. Jurgis Kankinis church, the construction of which they took care of themselves, was repeatedly criticized: it was said that nobles lived in wooden mansions, and such a palace contradicted the vows given to one of the brothers. To which the monks retorted that the wealth for construction came from abundant donations from benefactors and bequests written in wills "from a wooden house with a barn, two gardens to sixteen coats of bacon".

St. Jurgios Kankinis Church remained Gothic, despite all the reconstructions that took place after the wars and especially after the fires. The remains of the interior equipment that have survived to this day are a very valuable example of sacred art.
