Director Teona Strugar Mitevska ("God exists, her name is Petrunia”) and the incomparable Noomi Rapace (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo trilogy) present a provocative account of the woman the world knows as Mother Teresa, but has never seen her like. The film, presented at the prestigious Venice Film Festival and nominated for the Best Film Award, reveals that the greatest miracles are born not from perfect faith, but from hesitation, daily effort and love that defies any rules.
1948, Calcutta. Young Sister Teresė (actor N. Rapace) is an ambitious, strict and tormented by inner doubts at the prestigious St. Maria's school principal lives behind the high walls of the monastery, in a safe world. But inside she is "burning" - she is suffocated by rules, luxury in the middle of poverty and, above all, the shrill silence of God. It becomes more and more difficult for her to teach the rich girls, when in the meantime, right here, behind the high gates, right on the streets, people are dying in terrible poverty. Teresa decides to take a step that may cost everything - she asks the Vatican for permission to leave the order and help the needy.
However, the wait becomes even more difficult when her closest confidant and soulmate, Sister Agnieszka (actor Sylvia Hoeks, Running with a Razor Blade 2049) admits that she is pregnant. Scandal inside the monastery! The superiors of the monastery are trying to keep everything quiet just to avoid the wrath of the Vatican. And Teresa is forced to choose: adhere to strict dogmas or help her friend, risking her own life's mission.
Instead of condemning Agnieszka, Teresa sees in her a reflection of herself - a trapped woman who needs help, not sermons. The young girl throws off the traditional dress of a nun and dives alone, without any back, into the slums of Calcutta and the sweltering streets of the metropolis, where Teresa realizes the terrible truth - God does not work through miracles, but through her own mercy. And when she realizes that the "voice from heaven" she has been waiting for will not be there, an unbreakable fighter is born in her, who becomes a "mother" to those whom everyone has renounced.
Everyone called her a saint. She herself - never. This is not a story about holiness. This is a story about a fracture. About faith that collapses in order to be born again. The film "Mother. Before becoming a saint" about a real woman hidden behind myths, in cinemas from June 12.
