Two lonely souls live in autumn Helsinki. Restrained and unobtrusive, Ansa is a supermarket worker whose days pass boringly tagging goods and selecting outdated products. Kind-hearted but perpetually sullen, Holap works on construction sites and raises a glass. A man's life is simply a series of failures. But one night, Ansa and Holap meet at a karaoke bar. Love seems to be in the air. The two like silence, they only meet a few times, but sometimes one date at the cinema is enough to understand that you have met the right person. Especially if you're still watching a Jim Jarmusch movie together. N-13
Akios Kaurismäki's cinema always intertwines humor and sadness, bitterness, sentimentality and hope, relevance and universality. The director's characters are non-conformists who want to live according to their own routine, not someone else's, but, paradoxically, they are contemporaries of their time. The film was awarded the Jury Prize at Cannes.
