Tonight, together with musicologist Eirim Velička, we will listen to unique recordings of South Indian classical music vocalists M. S. Subbulakshmi and D. K. Pattammal with Eirim's comments.
Carnatic style music is characterized by an incredible abundance of rhythms and rhythms, it is energetic, ornate and emotional. It is a window into the world of South Indian musical culture. This music has been played in the Hindu temples of South India for centuries, but under British rule, its prestige declined dramatically.
A few South Indian women did the seemingly impossible: they took their traditional art of singing from the temples to the big stage and elevated these the prestige of music to previously unheard heights. They earned worldwide recognition during their performances - from the most prestigious concert halls to the stage of the United Nations General Assembly.
