While celebrating the 150th anniversary of the birth of M. K. Čiurlionis, saxophonist Jan Maksimovich and pianist Dmitry Golovanov invite a spectacular musical journey that blends the worlds of classical music, contemporary jazz and improvisation.
The "followed by Čiurlionis" is an interpretation of the composer's preludes, which is performed by talented improvisational musicians capable of developing original miniatures in their own way to larger forms. Preludes, historically reflecting the genre of improvisational music, are perfect for jazz philosophy. Both musicians with many years of experience in prestigious national and foreign scenes give up jazz stereotypes, maintaining the essence of Čiurlionis' music and harmoniously developing his creative elements. In each work of the program, Čiurlionis' motifs turn into improvisational stories, while performers keep a lively connection with listeners.
"We have been doing Čiurlionis' music for a long time. Initially we wanted to modernize, actualize his work, but in the long run we realized that we were not changing Čiurlionis, but he changes us - pianist Dmitry Golovanov shares his thoughts. Interpretation, turned into a cultural dialogue where Čiurlionis' work transforms into new improvisational forms without losing its original inspiration and depth. ”
At this concert, listeners will enjoy a special performance of a duo, who has developed almost telepathic musical connection, and to feel that Čiurlionis' music remains relevant, preserving their beauty, fragility and greatness. Both musicians are jazz performers recognized in Lithuania and abroad. Dmitry Golovanov 2018 and Jan Maksimovich became the winners of the Lithuanian Musicians' Union Award "Golden Disk" in 2025.
