Honeypaw is a duo of Jurgita Žvinklytė and Matti Palonen, formed after Jurgita in 2019. moved to Toronto (Canada). Since then, they have been performing traditional songs in Lithuanian, Finnish and Karelian languages on kankle, kantele and jouhikko instruments in Canada and Europe. Their music intertwines the myths of the Finnish Kalavelas, the collisions of Lithuanian sutras and the rhythms of the city of Toronto.
In this tour of Lithuania, the group will present a new repertoire created on the basis of phonograph roller recordings made by Finnish folklorist A.R. Niemi more than a hundred years ago. Niemi's plan was to conduct comparative studies of Finnish and White folk song texts, but he realized that at that time not enough material had been collected in Lithuania. This is how he came to North-Eastern Lithuania to collect and publish the first printed examples of Lithuanian polyphonic songs and sutra songs, and later he also visited Dzūkija region, but the songs collected here were never published. In 1912, he visited the same places to record songs and songs on phonograph rolls. in 2023 during a trip to Finland in May, the Honeypaw group visited the archives of the Finnish Literary Society and obtained copies of Niemi's unpublished wax roll recordings. Based on the selected songs from the recordings, he created a new repertoire "Songs from wax", which he will present in Nemunėlio Radvilišky, Valkininkai and Marcinkonysi, where those songs were recorded. Kaunas will be the first and last stop of the Honeypaw tour in Lithuania.
