Every year, the Kaunas Wind Instrument Orchestra "Ėuolynas" prepares a bundle of original works specially created for the wind instrument orchestra. The virtuosic lines of the orchestra's voices, which require special skill, merge into a harmonious and effective sound, proving once again that wind music is extremely colorful, diverse, twisting into a vortex of rhythms and melodies, and its rich sound often surpasses the scores of symphonic works.
From Lithuania, through Western Europe, to America, - one could briefly describe the musical journey of this year's program "Musica academia", which consisted of the orchestra "Ėuolynas Chief conductor Giedrius Vaznys. The Spanish composer Ferrer Ferran (b.1966) will invite you to take a walk through a magical forest inhabited by elves, fairies and gnomes. The composer likes to repeat that one should not forget to "dream", and with his music he says he wants to make the world happier. The orchestra will be joined by the oboist, professor of the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theater and the artistic director of the Lithuanian National Philharmonic "Musica humana" dr. Robert Beinaris, actively performing in Lithuania and foreign countries and always embarking on new, unknown musical journeys with a youthful spirit.
Composer, conductor and flutist Franco Cesarini was born in the country of the majestic Alps, where mountains are a natural part of everyone's life. In seven parts, the Swiss composer creates landscapes of matter and spiritual states - storm, fog, alpine pasture, melancholy, light improvisations, etc.
The listener will hear and feel, that more than half of the pieces in the program are created in the spirit of dance. American contemporary classical music composer Johno Mackey (1973) has been focusing on contemporary dance and ballet for several years, and this has greatly influenced his orchestral work. His composition "Undertow" is like a strong underwater current moving in the opposite direction from the surface, the energy of which the composer conveys with alternating meters and impressive percussion effects. The work of Frank Tichel (b. 1958) was inspired by the eruption of Vesuvius. The American composer imagines this work as an aggressive dance in the last days of the doomed Pompeii. The musical episodes of the piece contain a wide range of moods - from the canonically sounding battle to quiet, meandering oases of melodies. And finally - the composition of another American composer, Alfred Reed (1921 - 2005), "El camino real" (The Real Way) - a fantasy in which the rhythms and harmonies of traditional flamenco shine. Samuel Robert Haze's "Everything Beautiful" is a monument to the Teacher in honor of Charles (Chuck) Campbell, Jr., music educator, conductor and mentor of young music teachers. With his spirit, he inspired confidence and love for music in many. And this composition will crown the panorama of works by American composers for wind orchestra.
"Every year we try to include new works by Lithuanian composers in our programs. In this way, the repertoire of Lithuanian national music for wind players is expanded, the aim is to ensure a consistent dissemination of new Lithuanian music", - the organizer of this concert, head of KĮ "Kauno santaka" Vaidas Andriuškevičius, reveals the value vectors of the program. In cooperation with the Lithuanian Composers' Union, the Kaunas Wind Instrument Orchestra "Ėuolynas" commissioned a piece for the composer, pianist and jazz pedagogue Arūnas Navakas. According to the composer himself, he is most interested in the intersection of styles and genres, tonality and atonality, what is modern and what is traditional. The composer is also a well-known arranger, together with Kęstučius Antanėlius he created the rock opera "Peras Giuntas", he contributed to the creation of the most popular rock opera of all time "Love and Death in Verona".
The composer named his new work "A Simple Sandwich". It will combine the flavors and ingredients of the earlier rock opera "Peras Giuntas" and the string quartet, which, according to Arūnas Navak, probably won't spoil. It is good to know that the friendship of the Kaunas Wind Orchestra "Ėuolynas" with Lithuanian authors is growing, and with the new piece we will congratulate the composer on his 70th birthday.
An invitation to a concert for everyone who loves the sweet and colorful music of a wind orchestra and for those who are on the path of self-discovery.
