Debussy created the vocal cycle "Bilitis dainos" using the verses of his good friend, the poet P. Louÿs. This Belgian artist became famous for his work, singing the love of women in the style of the legendary ancient Greek poetess Sappho. Researchers say that the heroine of these songs, named Bilitis, was an ancient Greek courtesan and a contemporary of Sappho.
