Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis is a particularly important figure in the cultural history of Lithuania. He sought the harmony of several arts, he also created a number of graphic works, left works of literature and poetry, expressed himself in journalism. This year we commemorate the 150th anniversary of the birth of M.K. Čiurlionis, and 2025 is published in the year of this composer and artist.
The Kaunas String Quartet with colleagues pianist Kotryna Kaklauskaite, actor Henrikas Savickis and cellist Rūta Balčiūta will also combine the fields of music, art and theater in the evening program. Choosing M. K. Čiurlionis's only String Quartet in C minor as the central axis of the concert, the performers will masterfully combine the M. K. Čiurlionis' letters to Sofia, oh on the multimedia screen, viewers will be able to enjoy selected paintings by the artist, which, although seen many times, catch the eye every time.
Composer Remigius Merkel's composition for piano and string quartet "MiKonst" won 1st place in the competition dedicated to the 125th anniversary of M.K. Čiurlionis. The starting point of the piece is the abbreviation of M.K. Čiurlionis' name, expressed musically: a constantly (constant) repeating mint note. This piece also contains direct musical allusions to M. K. Čiurlionis: three the recurring motif of three repeated roosters is the first sounds of this composer's string quartet, and the polyphonic dialogue of violins and piano heard in the piece's coda is a simultaneous juxtaposition of his prelude and nocturne.
In the background of the letters read in the interludes, the audience will see M.K. Čiurlionis's painting "Peace" and hear fragments from the work "Peace" by composer Zita Bružaitė, about which the author writes: "Peace and the barely perceptible flickering of sunlight and the surface of the water... Peace may be external, but deep inside - storms, anxiety, joy. Everything that hides under the word "peace". The work was inspired by the painting "Ramybė". It is symbolic that this musical landscape "following M. K. Č" consists of 36 large measures: each measure symbolizes the years M. K. Čiurlionis lived. As M. K. Čiurlionis' anniversary year approaches, I turned to the score of the saxophone quartet created more than a decade ago and thought - maybe it would be suitable and for string quartet..."
Kaunas String Quartet cellist Kasparas Šerpytis will present the premiere. He not only plays well, but also creates music. The audience will hear a piece for piano and string quartet written in memory of M.K. Čiurlionis and see drawings by students of the Kaunas Art Gymnasium on the theme of M.K. Čiurlionis.
