IN THE PROGRAM – Arturo Bumštein's "Crowding" (premiere in Lithuania)
"Congestion" is a 45-minute sound experience for violin, flute and organ by composer and sound artist Artur Bumstein.
In this work uses very simple expanding chromatic arrangements that are turned into melodies using a random number generator. The composer does not choose the melodic sequence of sounds, but leaves it to chance to decide. This material is united by several ideas - elemental heterophony, simple process forms, random melodies in a narrow chromatic range, a ritualistic/minimalist approach to sound, limited performative expression and parallel tempos. The middle part of the piece sounds like ancient Lithuanian polyphonic sutartina music.
Composer Arturas Bumšteins is a sound artist who has won recognition not only in Lithuania, but also abroad. He is interested in listening/hearing problems and self-made creative methods. The artist works at the crossroads of music, performance art, performance art, theater and radio art, his works were presented by Holland Festival, Unsound, Ultraschall, Cricoteka, Operamanija, Deutschlandfunk Kultur, Contemporary Art Center, Gate Gallery, Berghain Kantine. in 2014 A. Bumstein was awarded the "Palma Ars Acustica" prize in 2017. was a resident of the DAAD program for artists in Berlin, and in 2019 for the integration of sound experiments into Lithuanian theater contexts he won the Boris Dauguvietis award.
