The program of arias and duets of the English baroque genius Henry Purcell is full of not only lyrical and dramatic, but also fantastic and comic elements . The enigmatic title of the concert "Hidden Opera" speaks of the specific situation of English opera in the 17th century. The most dramatic page of its history is related to the political coup in 1649. the head of the monarch himself fell from the guillotine platform...
The government that overthrew the kings established puritanical attitudes - the theaters were closed, and the art of opera, which demanded exceptional luxury, was universally condemned. However, productions close to opera were sometimes held secretly in aristocratic homes, calling them simply performances or "representations". Thus, the "hidden" opera lived under the guise of other stage genres.
The great English baroque genius Henry Purcell was born In 1659, last during the opera ban, and created under the already restored monarchy, satisfying the nobles' need for spectacular stage entertainment. However, the development of English opera was influenced not only by the Puritan ban, but also by the so-called palace "masque" tradition. The so-called "masks" were visual performances consisting of speaking and singing episodes, in which dances performed with masks played a leading role (they were often danced by nobles themselves and even kings). This genre was so popular in England that in the 17th century the English opera partly remained a "mask", in which the sung music is assigned a complementary, secondary role. During his extremely short (he died at the age of 36), but productive musical life, Purcell wrote music for more than 40 plays, masques or semioperas. They are characterized by the fact that the plot is developed according to the principles of a dramatic performance, i.e. the main characters on the stage speak, and usually fantastical characters sing - goddesses and gods, witches, cupids, allegorical figures such as Night, Mystery or Frost, or pastoral, comic characters such as the drunken poet or the court maid. Therefore, the duets and arias performed at the "Hidden Opera" concert will sparkle with fantastic and humorous colors. They reveal Purcell's talent for drawing different characters. The concert program, which is diversified by stories and directing elements, includes episodes from the semioperas "King Arthur", "The Tempest", "Queen of the Fairies", "Queen of India", "Pausanias", "Didone and Aeneas", etc.
