"Scandinavian trumpet phenomenon", "Unforgettable adventure" - this is how European jazz critics describe their impressions from concerts with Swedish trumpeter Lasse Lindgren. The performer is famous for his unrestrained improvisational energy and virtuosity, freedom on stage and sense of humor.
Lasse Lindgren was born in 1962 in Gothenburg. At the age of five, he heard the sound of Louis Armstrong's trumpet on the radio and never forgot it, at nine he started learning to play the trumpet. L. Armstrong is not the only favorite of Lasse, inspired by Glenn Miller he took up the trombone, so he can be heard in concerts as both a trumpet player and a trombonist.
L. Lingdren plays the Snake, an instrument specially built for him, but the performer also has in his trumpet collection an instrument of jazz legend Maynard Ferguson, which was given to Lasse by Ernie Garside, a long-time trumpeter and manager of Mr. Ferguson's band.
L. Lindgren began his career as a freelance trumpet player, playing in Bohuslan, Skandinaviken and Danish Radio big bands. Now he regularly performs with his own groups - Big Constellation big band, Hip Bop quartet and solo. L. Lindgren's tour map is also impressive - from Estonia and Iceland to Cuba. Lasse has collaborated with jazz megastars such as Ray Anderson, Django Bates, Bob Brookmeyer, Deborah Brown, Ray Charles, George Gruntz, Joe Henderson, Chuck Israels, Rob McConell, Jim McNeely, Vince Mendoza, Palle Mikkelborg, Bob Minzer, Jerome Richardson, The Real Thing, David Sandborn, Lew Solof, Maria Schneider, Clark Terry, McCoy Tyner, Kenny Wheeler, Phil Woods, Putte Wickman Nils Landgren.
Kristine Prauliņa - a young singer from Riga who started singing in the Riga gospel choir. She was 12 years old when she started playing music seriously. Now she performs not only in Latvia, but also in many countries of the world as a soloist, with a gospel choir and other jazz, blues and pop music groups. Taking part in the "Riga Jazz Stage" contest, Kristine became the Grand Prix winner in the "Best vocal" nomination.
Latvian Radio Big Band was founded in 1966. After the restoration of Latvian independence in 1996 the country's only professional jazz orchestra - the Latvian Radio Big Band - was forced to cease operations. However, after a 16-year hiatus, with new ideas and renewal, the Latvian Radio Big Band was reborn. The renaissance of the jazz orchestra was influenced by such Latvian jazz musicians and creators as Māris Briežkalns, Kārlis Vanags and Raimonds Pauls. The first performance of the newly reconstituted orchestra was with one of the most famous vocalists in the jazz world, Kurt Elling and the Italian jazz diva Roberta Gambarini. Since then, the big band has performed with such musical stars as James Morrison, Seamus Blake, Randy Brecker, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Marius Neset, Jojo Mayer, Richard Bona, Michael Pipoquinha and many others. Every big band performance is like an energy exchange between the musicians and the audience. Today, the collective is an integral part of Latvian culture and prepares new interesting projects under the leadership of Kārlius Vanagas.
