Soloist Petras Geniušas (piano)
Pianist Petras Geniušas stands out among Lithuanian performers for his versatility of interests and constant, often risky, new forms of expression, unusual in search of musical and spiritual experiences. Masterfully mastering a wide repertoire of classical, romantic and contemporary works, he organizes recitals and performs as a soloist with Lithuanian symphony orchestras, various chamber ensembles and soloists, conductors.
His stage partners are former M. Rostropovičius, J. Menuchin. , R. Katilius, A. Kniazevs, D. Geringas, V. Noreika, V. Chekasin, V. Tarasov. However, the role of a classical pianist is too small for P. Genius: it is not uncommon to see him on stage accompanying drama performances, ballet or even cabaret, participating in projects that cross jazz and various musical styles. Innate curiosity encourages him not to limit himself to the experience and activities of a classical pianist, tirelessly expanding his musical horizons - from the English virginalists and the folklore of various peoples of the world to avant-garde music, jazz and electronics. In return, all these interests enrich P. Geniuš's practice of classical music. Next to developed musical taste, technique and sensitivity to sound, this is apparently one of the most valuable qualities of this pianist.
P. Geniuš was born in a family of musicians in Vilnius. Studied with prof. Jurgis Karnavičiau at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theater, later at prof. Vera Gornostajev at the Moscow Conservatory. Having won several top awards in prestigious piano competitions (among them: 2nd prize at the Pilar Bayona Piano Competition in Zaragoza in 1989; 1st prize at the Y.C.A.A. International Piano Competition in Oberlin and 3rd prize at the A.M.S.A. World Piano Competition in Cincinnati in 1991; 1st prize at the Palm Beach International Guest Pianists Competition competition in 1992), he established himself as one of the most talented and mature pianists of his generation. In addition to his regular concert activities in Lithuania, Mr. Geniuš has earned international recognition for his performances in forty countries and in the world's most famous concert halls - the Great Hall of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic, the Alice Tully and Avery Fisher halls of the Lincoln Center in New York, the Tokyo Geijitsu Geikijo and Vienna "Musikverein".
Sharing his accumulated experience and interests helps Mr. Genius in constant contact with young pianists. He is famous as a demanding and inspiring teacher, conducting master courses in Vilnius, Tokyo and Osaka, at the Royal Academy of Music in London (1996-1998), Swedish-Lithuanian master courses "Academia Baltica", 1992-1998. teaching at the Yamaha Masterclass in Tokyo. P. Geniušas is currently a professor at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theater. He has been teaching at the Royal Academy of Scotland since 2015.
His discography includes several recordings that were well received by critics and audiences, released by various publishers in Germany, Japan and Lithuania. in 2004 The documentary film "Improvisation. Topic: Petras Geniušas", in which the pianist is presented not as a fringed "lion" of concert halls, but in his everyday environment in Vilnius, Moscow and London with his family, friends, colleagues and students.
For his extensive concert and creative activities P Geniuš was awarded the Lithuanian National Art and Culture Prize (1992), the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Prize (2004), awarded with the honorary badge of the Ministry of Culture "Carry your light and believe". in 2015 awarded with the Knight's Cross of the Order of the Grand Duke Gediminas of Lithuania.
