ECHOES OF ČIURLIÓN
Peace. Anger. Eternity.
Vincenzo De Martino (piano)
The summer evenings of the night concert marathon festival NESSUN DORMA invite you not only to listen to music, but also to discover unexpected dialogues between cultures, eras and artistic worlds. Italian pianist Vincenzo De Martino, who has been living in Lithuania for more than a decade and consistently seeks connections between Lithuanian and Italian musical culture in his creative activities, will present one such meeting to the listeners.
Tonight, the performer will present a new program "Echoes of Čiurlionis", which will fit into the echo of the 150th anniversary of the birth of Mikalojus Konstantinos Čiurlionis. Although the anniversary year has officially passed, this reverberation is truly endless - it is constantly reborn in new performances, research and artistic discoveries, giving new meaning to the work of the brilliant Lithuanian composer and artist.
The program is a three-part musical journey: "Peace", "Rustness" and "Eternity", combining the sound worlds of Čiurlionis and Italian composers and revealing the connections between man, nature and the universe. In the musical narrative, the subtle but intriguing connections between Lithuanian and Italian cultures, reflections of their aesthetics and worldview at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries come to light. Čiurlionis' preludes meet here with the works of Gian Francesco Malipiero, Alfredo Casella, Giovanni Sgambati and Nino Rota, allowing you to hear unexpected consonances of different cultures.
The idea of this program naturally continues the pianist's own creative direction. Vincenzo De Martino often prepares programs based on well-known or self-discovered Lithuanian and Italian musical parallels. Among them are projects performed in various cities of Lithuania and Italy, which invited us to look at the culture of both countries not as separate worlds, but as part of the common European musical tradition.
Vincenzo De Martino was born in Cagliari (Italy), studied at the Cagliari State Conservatory, later at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theater, where he completed his master's studies and art doctorate. Winner of international competitions, 2018 The winner of the Stasios Vainiūnas piano competition has performed in many European countries as a soloist and chamber music performer. In addition to active concert activities, he thoroughly researches the work of Lithuanian composers, writes about it in scientific publications and presents it at international conferences. For creative activity in 2019 the pianist was awarded with a letter of thanks from the President of the Republic of Lithuania, Dalia Grybauskaitė.
Listeners are not waiting for a traditional recital, but a coherent musical narrative, in which the most important thing is not the individual pieces, but the internal dramaturgy created by them. Here, peace, anger and eternity become not only parts of the program, but also signs of a person's spiritual journey.
After the concert, festival guests are invited to stay at the media opera session "ČIURLIONIS: MATAU MUZIKKA". Thus, the evening naturally extends the acquaintance with the world of Čiurlionis - a world where music turns into vision, and vision becomes music.
