The program includes Camille Saint-Saëns' fantasy "Carnival of the Beasts" for two pianos and orchestra
The fantasy "Carnival of the Beasts" by the French composer Camille Saint-Saëns is a program suite from fourteen plays, bursting with humor, full of appropriate genre images.
The composer created it in 1886. as a joke for the concert of friends, which was supposed to take place during Mardi Gras. Saint-Saëns later banned the publication and public performance of this occassional piece, not wanting to be labeled as a creator of "serious" music. He did not ban the only "Swan", and it immediately became popular. And the entire "Carnival of Animals" until the composer's death in 1921. was performed only in private spaces.
In the short "Lion Introduction" played by pianos, an exotic theme imitates the roar of a lion. "Chickens and Roosters" are very realistic, and the "Mules" gallop incredibly fast to bite them, contrasting with the clumsy "Turtles" whose kankan sounds at the slowest possible tempo. "Elephant" is introduced by a witty double bass, clumsily playing the graceful and delicate melody of Hector Berlioz's Ballet of the Sylphs. Pianos imitate the capricious jumps of "Kangaroos", after which "Aquarium" appears before our eyes. The "longest characters" - the critics - are characterized by sarcastic whistles and donkey braying. Pianos and clarinet represent "The Cuckoo", while the flute creates a picture of the entire "Birdcage". The "pianists", which you don't usually see at the zoo, learn scales with emphasis. The "Fossils" sounding after them create the image of antiquity. The cello playing "Swan" reminds of the dance created by Mikhail Fokin for Anna Pavlova. The fantasy ends with a recapitulation finale.
