On New Year's Eve St. The Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra and its artistic director, violinist Sergejus Krylovas, traditionally appear in St. John's Church, he will play W.A. Mozart's Concerto for Violin and Orchestra No. 1 in B-flat major, KV 207. The composer wrote violin concertos for his own performances: at that time he collaborated intensively with the Salzburg band. There are no tragic or pathetically stormy episodes in these works, so characteristic of his piano concertos. Nothing surprising, Mozart was only 19 years old at the time.
Besides operas, symphonies, concertos, quartets, sonatas, masses, cantatas, Mozart has created a number of divertissements - occasional music and joke pieces that nobles ordered for guest receptions, for public outdoor events, weddings and birthdays. Classicist divertissements (French divertissement, Italian divertimento - fun, entertainment) were written for chamber orchestra or instrumental ensemble. At the beginning of the concert, we will hear one of them - Divertisment No. 2 in B-flat major, KV 137.
About Joseph Haydn's Symphony no. 45 in F sharp minor ("Farewell"), various legends are told about its unusualness. in 1772 Haydn's patron and employer, Duke Esterházy, with his entourage and orchestra, stayed too long in his summer residence: the orchestra members lived there in poor conditions, caught cold and fell ill. Even Kapellmeister Haydn did not dare to tell the duke that directly. Then he composed a new symphony and invited the duke to listen, and at the end of the piece he arranged a performance: after the usual fast finale part, a slow Adagio sounded, and the musicians of the orchestra, extinguishing the candles on the consoles, left the stage one by one. Only Haydn himself and the concertmaster of the orchestra remained strict. The Duke understood the hint and soon ended the summer season.
One of the longest-living traditions of the Philharmonic's New Year's concerts is the accompaniment of the old year with the sound of this Haydn symphony. For more than 50 years, the musicians of the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra have been playing the legendary piece one after the other as the candles go out...
