In 2011. A tsunami occurred in the vicinity of Otsuchi, killing 10 percent of the population. city residents. Gradually, people found out about the phone booth and started visiting Itaru Sasaki Garden to call their lost loved ones.
From 2022. on March 1, just a week after Russia started the war in Ukraine, an old payphone, identical to the "wind phone" that stood in Japan, was placed near the Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theater. People were invited to stop by and "call" those who didn't get to say what they wanted to say in time, and now it's too late. In more than 6 months, the phone was picked up about 4000 times. The audio recordings of all the authentic stories became the basis of the opera libretto.
The payphone opera "Things I didn't dare say and now it's too late" is a sensitive, delicate story of a person who is grieving, and at the same time it is a transparent cut through grief. open geographical territories, a journey to meeting, reconciliation, experiencing the world as a whole.
Creators about the performance:
The payphone opera is a poem for human transience. Delicate, human and sometimes witty images are created on the stage from here and there: bodies and objects appear here and disappear in the light and dark. Everything passes - people, time, places, things, events.
Director and playwright Kamilė Gudmonaitė
My relationship with the work, more precisely with by the recordings of "calls" left by passers-by on the payphone that make up it, constantly changed. At each stage of the long creative process, I discovered a different perspective on what each one expressed in the payphone booth. At first, as if listening to very open statements from the sidelines, I now reconsider them by standing in the place of the callers or their addressees. This opera posed quite a few challenges: how to create the inner sound image of each of us, how to transfer the often extremely sensitive, delicate content of the calls - the sacred being - to the theater stage? Music, sound here becomes an invisible medium, spreading energy, telling what we didn't dare to say, and now it's too late.
Composer Dominykas Digimas
The scenery of this piece - it is an intermediate space, like a reflection of the inner world, a meeting where a relationship with the beyond is felt. The action takes place in a transitional space that highlights border states, where everyday life is intertwined with temporality and uncertainty. The visual atmosphere of the work is dedicated to life and death, closeness and longing.
