This concert is organized in collaboration with the Embassy of the Republic of Ireland to commemorate Ireland's Presidency of the Council of the European Union. The axis of the program is a dialogue between two cultures, where the Irish bagpipes and the Lithuanian symphony brass band meet, giving meaning to the idea of community and European partnership. The symphonic poem "Miške" by M. K. Čiurlionis in the first part and the works of the American classic A. Copland pave the way between national identity and universal values. The culmination of the concert is a special premiere of Shaun Davey's work, in which the Irish bagpipe virtuoso Mark Redmond, together with Lithuanian performers, masterfully combines tradition and modernity.
Shaun Davey is one of the most prominent contemporary Irish composers, whose work combines Irish folk music and classical orchestral traditions. His monumental works often focus on Irish history and culture, and highlights such as The Brendan Voyage made Irish bagpipes famous in a symphonic context around the world. Davey has won the prestigious Ivor Novello Award, two BAFTA nominations and a Tony nomination for his music for Broadway musicals.
Mark Redmond is a master of the Irish uilleann pipes, recognized in both the traditional and classical music scenes. Mr Redmond has performed with ensembles such as the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra and played music in the famous Riverdance show. He played at the most important state events in Ireland, including the visit of Pope Francis and Queen Elizabeth II's official visit to Ireland. Currently, the artist teaches traditional music at the Royal Irish Academy of Music.
