This fall, he is coming to Lithuania for the first time Enno Poppe, one of the most famous contemporary German composers and conductors. October 30 at the international topical music festival "Gaida 2024" his most impressive work of the last decade "Rundfunk" - a one-hour electronic music composition for 9 synthesizers - will be played. In cooperation with Goethe's Institute, this work is brought to Vilnius by the luminary of Berlin's new music scene - "ensemble mosaik" (Germany). The concert is held at the Arts Printing House. Enno Poppe will be visiting Vilnius as a guest composer of the festival, and the Lithuanian audience will be able to hear Enno's other acclaimed works at various concerts of the festival (Lithuanian national and state symphony orchestras, cello group "Cello Club").
Enno Poppe is considered one of the most influential contemporary German composers. For more than thirty years, he has been living and creating in Berlin, which is pulsating with diverse contemporary culture, which he moved to during his student years, when he studied conducting and composition at the Berlin University of the Arts. Interested in electronic music, he simultaneously studied sound synthesis and algorithmic composition at the Technical University of Berlin and the Art and Media Center "ZKM Karlsruhe".
As a composer and conductor, Enno Poppe collaborates with the most important European new music ensembles: Klangforum Wien, Ensemble Musikfabrik, Ensemble Resonanz, Ensemble Intercontemporain, Ensemble Modern, London Sinfonietta, Ensemble Contrechamps, Musikfabrik, Ensemble 2e2m, " SWR Vokalensemble, Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart and many others. Since 1998 he is a member and conductor of ensemble mosaik.
Enno Poppe has composed music commissioned by such well-known ensembles as the Los Angeles Philharmonic, West German Radio (WDR), Helsinki Philharmonic symphony orchestras. His works were premiered at the most important international festivals in Germany and Austria: "Donaueschinger Musiktage", "Salzburger Festspiele", "musica viva" in Munich, "Ultraschall" and "MaerzMusik" in Berlin, "Eclat" in Stuttgart and many others.
Enno's works are performed by the world's best masters of new music: Arditti Quartet, Kairos Quartet, conductors Susanna Mälkki, Emilio Pomárico, Peter Rundel, Southwest German Radio (SWR) Symphony Orchestra, BBC Scottish Symphony orchestra, Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, Frankfurt Symphony Orchestra, Junge Deutsche Philharmonie. Enno's awards include the Busoni Composition Prize of the Berlin Academy of Arts (2002), the Ernst von Siemens Foundation and the Schneider-Schott Music Prize (2005), the Happy New Ears Prize of the Hans and Gertrud Zender Foundation (2011), Hans Werner Henze's prize (2013), "Deutscher Musikautorenpreis" prize of the German Copyright Association (2016). The composer's recognition is also evidenced by the fact that he has taught at the legendary new music courses in Darmstadt (Germany) and at the famous "Impuls" academy in Graz (Austria).
Rundfunk (Radio) was created by Enno Poppe in 2018. The author explains his idea: "Without radio, new music would not exist in its current form. The invention and development of electronic music in radio studios is one of the great moments in the history of radio as a medium. In the piece "Rundfunk" I use the historical sound extracted from the synthesizers of the past decades. My instruments are nine computers and nine keyboards. The sound aesthetic is 60s and 70s, the kind that Gottfried Michael Koenig, Thomas Kessler, John Chowning, Tangerine Dream were producing. Because they don't use original instruments, but computer-generated replicas, the sound is a bit different than it was back then."
Rundfunk was created for ensemble mosaik, with with which Enno Poppe is connected by long-term friendship and cooperation. Founded in Berlin in 1997, "ensemble mosaik" is still famous as a collective that boldly experiments, combining different genres and art forms. The collective created a new playing culture with performances combining multimedia and different means of stage expression and various performance situations, which became a model for many younger ensembles. In addition to collaborating with the most famous composers, ensemble mosaik also performs works by young authors. The collective cooperates with the Berlin Academy of Arts and the famous DAAD artist residency program, performs on the most important stages in Germany and Austria, this year it already played at the Berlin Philharmonic, the Grafenegg Classical Music Festival, etc.
