Agnė Nemanytė will present traditional and contemporary music from the island of Crete. It will invite you to get acquainted with traditional Cretan musical instruments and musicians of impressive talent.

Cretan music is the oldest music of Greece and perhaps of the whole of Europe, it is one of the most beautiful and richest Greek musical traditions, which is full of the island's history, culture and lifestyle. Its uniqueness comes from the various cultural influences that the island of Crete has experienced over the centuries, combining traditions, sounds and rhythms from Byzantium, Venice, the Ottoman Empire and ancient Greece. This music is usually described as passionate, dynamic and deep, with a strong ethnic character.

NEAR MUSIC, the evening is hosted by Agnė Nemanytė - a director and researcher of traditional music.

Agnė will introduce the guests to several Cretan folklore. in musical styles such as Rizitika, Mandinades, Erotokritos. You will hear music dedicated to Thracian dances of the island of Crete: Syrtos, Maleviziotis, Syganos. The director will present the most famous musicians and their voices: Nikos Xylouris, Antonis Xilouris (nickname Psarantonis), Charalampos Garganourakis and others. And will also share personal records from a research trip in Crete.
