Old-year accompaniments playing Franz Schubert's delicate "Trout" quintet ("Forellenquintett") have become a beautiful tradition of the Vilnius State Quartet and its friends.

Schubert wrote it in 1819, at the age of 22, the work was not published while the author was alive and appeared only a year after his death in 1829. Today, this opus is considered one of the most important masterpieces of chamber music. The composition of the quintet seemed somewhat unusual at the time - instead of taking the traditional combination of piano and string quartet, the composer chose a double bass instead of the second violin. The "Trout" quintet was commissioned by Sylvester Paumgartner, a wealthy patron and amateur cellist, and he suggested that Schubert include the song "Trout", well-known to many, which he wrote earlier.

On the last evening of 2026, the Vilnius String Quartet performs this piece with pianist Gintaras Januševičius and double bassist Donats Bagurskas. And next to Trout, the New Year's program will feature the moody and festive, audience favorite, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Serenade for Strings "Mažoji naktes muzika". Probably, it would be difficult to find a person who is at least somewhat interested in music, who has not heard this piece. Although the customer and the purpose of its creation are unknown, at that time the composer wrote a number of serenades and divertissements for receptions of guests in parks, various events in the open air, concerts at the homes of friends and patrons, weddings, birthdays and other celebrations.
