Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis is the name that embodies the Lithuanian musical and artistic spirit. This year, celebrating its 150th birth anniversary, the Mixed Choir of Vilnius University, Pro Musica, presents a special program for the choral and piano creation of this genius of the Lithuanian nation. The choir and Gediminas Gelgotas will reveal the most prominent aspects of M. K. Čiurlionis' musical heritage - the subtle piano plays will be performed, highlighting his harmonious Lithuanian folk songs and religious hymns that breathe our national self. A surprise awaits listeners 'concert - the choir opus of contemporary composer Donatas Zakar with the motifs of Čiurlionis' life.
"Chiurlionis' music rarely sounds in both Lithuanian and foreign scenes. It is no wonder because his works are not easy and not every choir are determined to take them. The anniversary year and this concert is a great opportunity to contribute to the filling of this gap," emphasizes Rasa Gelgotiene, artistic director of the Vilnius University Music Choir.
According to the conductors, M. K. Čiurlionis managed to maintain the authenticity of folk melodies in harmonious Lithuanian songs and enriched them with their chords to purify our nation, in sacral works full of deep spirituality, linked his personal philosophical and religious reflections, and piano nuances.
