The unique Lithuanian group of cellists "Cello Club" will organize a new performance filled with spatial meanings

The only group of cellists in Lithuania " Cello Club" on October 27 will hold a special performance at St. Catherine's Church in Vilnius. One of the most charismatic ensembles of the Lithuanian music scene is preparing a concert, which will consist of exclusive premiere works, and the spatial arrangement of the musicians will be implemented on a special 360-degree stage. For the first time in Lithuania, works by the legendary US minimalist Steve Reich, one of the world's most famous composers Kaija Saariah (Finland) and Enno Poppe (Germany) for cello ensemble will be performed, as well as two world premieres: works by Lithuanian composer Justė Janulytė, who always attracts the attention of the public and critics, who lives in Italy, and the recognized the latest works of the Lithuanian minimalist Rytis Mažulis. It is expected that this concert will be no less, if not more impressive, than the previous Cello Club concert at the Gaida International Contemporary Music Festival, when a masterful performance of the hour-long piece "8" by another famous New York composer, Michael Gordon, was met with a standing ovation.

The guest composers of this year's "Gaida" festival will also come to this concert - one of today's most famous German composers Enno Poppe and the internationally recognized Lithuanian author Justė Janulytė, who specially for this concert and "Cello Club" has prepared its own pieces for the ensemble.

The cellist team "Cello Club" has been active since 2020. The five members of the ensemble Povilas Jacunskas, Domas Jakštas, Arnas Kmieliauskas, Evaldas Petkus and Rokas Vaitkevičius are active musicians on the Lithuanian stage. D. Jakštas - St. Concertmasters of the Kristoforos Chamber Orchestra, R. Vaitkevičius - Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theater Orchestra, P. Jacunskas - Lithuanian State Symphony Orchestra cello groups, A. Kmieliauskas - Lithuanian State Symphony Orchestra, E. Petkus - Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra. Cellists also play in various chamber ensembles.

"Cello Club" is inspired by globally popular ensembles of homogeneous composition, which become ambassadors of both their instrument and their country. The uniqueness of the ensemble is the democratic principle of operation, when each member of the ensemble can become a leader, a soloist. The name Cello Club, which means "cello club", encodes a message of openness, not committing to a single line-up and leaving freedom for various programmatic and ensemble composition choices. The audience can hear Cello Club performing both academic and popular classics as well as works of a lighter genre, the ensemble does not shy away from humor and flexibly looks at the boundaries of high art and entertainment. The Cello Club is also open to other colleagues. For example, the first in Lithuania to perform M. Gordon's work "8", the ensemble invited three other performers to join their "club". In this concert, the composition of the ensemble, which has been expanded to 8 cellists, is already becoming a regular fixture, as the "Gaida" festival offers more and more pieces for a larger ensemble composition every time.

The cellist of the group "Cello Club" Arnas Kmieliauskas says: "Although the work of the composers playing in this concert is distinguished by their unique and individual stylistics, we can find common links in their work. One point of intersection is the exploration of sound textures and their change in time and space. During the concert, the Cello Club performers will sit in a circle, and the audience will sit around the performers. This form of arrangement will allow the sounds to spread throughout the space evenly, and not one-sidedly, towards one direction, as is the case in ordinary concerts. Such an arrangement reveals three essential elements of spatial sound production: sound source location, sound movement, and spatial acoustics. The movement of sounds in space will enhance the timbral and emotional aspects of each piece, creating different acoustic experiences that will make listeners feel like they are part of the piece".

„ Cello Club constantly expands the list of performed music, filling the repertoire with its own arrangements. The ensemble plays composers romantics, the most prominent of the 20th century. and the works of contemporary world and Lithuanian authors. The Cello Club repertoire includes music by Arvo Pärt, Philip Glass, Max Richter, Edvard Grieg, Samuel Barber, Béla Bartók, Anatolij Šenderov, Dominyk Digim and many other authors. "Cello Club" is invited to major Lithuanian festivals, plays in the most important concert halls. in 2023 Together with the new vocal music ensemble "Melos", the quintet "Cello Club" released the album "Monochrome", which includes new works by Lithuanian composers.
