On the evening of July 23rd, the world-class tenor Joseph Calleja and the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra will meet on the stage of "Midsummer Vilnius" - a rare opportunity to hear one of the most valued opera voices of today. This evening in the festival program stands out on an international scale: a soloist whose performances have been recorded on the world's brightest stages and whose voice has been heard in the repertoires of major theaters for more than two decades is coming to Vilnius.
Joseph Calleja entered the professional stage at the age of nineteen, soon won the prestigious "Caruso" competition and became a laureate of "Operalia" - these evaluations opened the way for him to the international world of opera. in 2012 he was voted Gramophone's Artist of the Year. Since the beginning of his career, he has become a regularly invited soloist at New York's Metropolitan Opera, London's Royal Opera House, Munich's Bayerische Staatsoper, Vienna, Berlin and other major European and American opera houses.
Calleja is famous for her special vocal signature - a rich, "golden age"-like timbre and the ability to combine the bel canto tradition with the emotional power of romantic opera. His repertoire covers a wide range of classical and romantic operas, but he is most prominent in the Italian and French tradition: Verdi, Puccini, Donizetti, Bellini and interpretations of French romantic music. Critics constantly emphasize the lightness of his voice, elegant phrasing and precision of style. Since 2003 Calleja is a Decca Classics exclusive artist. His recording of La traviata with Renée Fleming and Thomas Hampson earned Calleja a Grammy nomination, one of the most important accolades of his recording career.
Calleja sang at the Nobel Prize concert in Stockholm and has appeared twice at the BBC Proms, the pinnacle of the British classical music tradition. He also gave private performances for the United Kingdom's royal family, Queen Elizabeth II and King Charles III. In addition to the opera stage, Calleja in 2014 made his Hollywood debut in The Immigrant.
Joseph Callejo's performance is another festival dialogue with world opera, inviting you to experience an evening of the highest artistry under the open sky of Vilnius.
