We invite you not to miss the opportunity to hear the story of the Lithuanian chapels in the main Catholic shrines of the world. The appearance of these chapels at the height of the Cold War became Lithuania's political statement and perpetuated the country's name when Lithuania did not exist on the world geopolitical map. The exhibition will be open until October 5.
The exhibition presents the Washington National Shrine and St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican, the Lithuanian chapels that have been operating for more than fifty years, the historical and artistic contexts of their creation. Today, we rarely think that their appearance in the two centers of the Western world at the height of the Cold War is tantamount to a miracle. At that time, Lithuania did not exist on the geopolitical map of the world, Catholicism was persecuted and crushed in our country, believers suffered restrictions and repressions.
This exhibition brings the history of both chapels closer together, reveals their significance for Lithuanians. diaspora and occupied Lithuania. The exhibition pays special attention to the artistic contexts that allowed Lithuanian artists who were war refugees to integrate into the artistic life of the countries that received them. Additional parts of the exhibition are devoted to the modernization of interwar Lithuanian ecclesiastical art and architecture and the work of Lithuanian artists who left their homeland at the end of World War II.
