The story of Mary of Egypt, surrounded by rumors and mysticism, is the point from which the creators of the play resist. This woman, who lived in the 4th century, was forced to sell her body. Alexandria, together with the pilgrims traveled to Jerusalem. However, the gate to the Holy Sepulcher was closed to her. After that, she wandered in the desert for years, seeking repentance and peace.
What would the story of a 21st century Mary of Egypt, wandering in an urbanized "desert" looking for liberation look like? Has becoming more civilized left less violence in our society? Has she become more empathetic? More lenient? More tolerant? Finally, less patriarchal?
Today Mary of Egypt can be any woman - mother, daughter, sister, wife, who daily maneuvers that sharp border between the holy and the sinful.
In this premiere OKT/Vilnius City Theater will invite you to enter another unexplored and this time extremely inconvenient, but extremely important territory of X. "Holy" is a territory of abuse, where a woman, who has suffered abuse and addiction all her life, finds the strength to get out of her crisis and choose a radically different direction in life. This is a performance about a woman's survival in a radical patriarchal society, full of violence against women.
