* Patina - a thin green, brown or blue film on the surface of copper, brass, bronze articles, resulting from moisture or special treatment with oxidizers.
Early spring morning. It's falling apart. The family is about to sit down at the breakfast table, but one son is late. How can he afford it? After all, certain rules must be followed at home. Do not be late, do not hide anything, speak at the right time and be silent at the right time. These rules are obeyed by the family and must be obeyed by everyone who enters the door of the house.
In Virginija Rimkaitė's play "Patina" the closest people act, but their official and cold communication betrays that the playwright is telling us about a family relationship in crisis. At the center of the play is the Mother, who creates the myth of a harsh world outside the walls of the house and the opposite illusion of a safe home. However, security here equals unlimited control by family members. The eldest son, Henrik, who has a congenital heart defect, does not have great social skills, so we watch his absurdly comical efforts to form relationships with the women that Mother chooses to be his wives and nurses. The younger son Alberts works nearby, as if imperceptibly, whose silence is undoubtedly hiding something. The events of one day in the play lead to the dramatic consequences of rebellion against the Mother System.
The director of the show, Eglė Švedkauskaitė, says that she is intrigued by the world created by Mother, in which other characters easily become hostages: "being ruthless to herself as much as to others, Mother protects the myth she created about family well-being and values. For society, family relations have always been a relevant topic - the family changes with the changing times and this causes fractures and conflicts between people with different beliefs, between different generations. In this performance, we will talk about the distorted reality, when family values turn into a justification for cruelty".
