Kaunas is a city that entered the race with Europe between the wars and won. A city called Little Paris. A city whose modernist architecture is recognized on a global scale today - 2023. Kaunas modernism has been granted UNESCO World Heritage status as one of the most prominent examples of early regionalism in the history of architecture.
This excursion-performance invites you not only to see, but also to hear, feel and experience.
This is 2017. the revival of the created project - a synthesis of sounds, movement and architecture, which allows you to immerse yourself in interwar Kaunas through the stories of the buildings and the people who lived in them. Politics, diplomatic intrigues, cultural breakthroughs and the daily pulse of the city meet here.
The stories playing in the headphones take you to the era in which such personalities as Antanas Smetona, Augustinas Voldemaras, Čiunė Sugihara, Magdalena Avietenaitė and many others were active. Their fates, decisions and the spirit of the times are intertwined with the biographies of the buildings - because every modernist building here has its own character, ambition and history.
The movement trajectory becomes a living map of the city: Vytautas the Great War Museum garden - Vienybės iikšta - S. Daukanto street - Laisvės aleja. During the journey lasting just over an hour, the city opens up as an ambitious, optimistic and creative center of Europe.
This project is unique in that the viewer is not a passive observer here. The voices in the headphones (voiced by R. Zemkauskas, G. Padegimos, B. Letukaitė, J. Kančienės, etc.) merge with the original music and live movement of the ULNA dancers. The professional dancers of the ULNA troupe and the students of the Mika Petrauskas School of Performing Arts in Kaunas transform architectural forms into a physical experience - they express the purity, rhythm and vigor of modernism through movement.
This is not just an excursion.
