Performance-Fantasy "Samogitian".
What best helps to understand the portrait of the ethno -cultural region? Maybe historical and documentary material, maybe myths and folk wisdom, or maybe the archives of the Internet forums and the software of political parties? The creative team of the performance "Žemaitė" performed all of this artistic-historical research to better understand what Samogitia is for the modern Lithuanian inhabitant.
Why not any other land? History shows that Samogitia was the most autonomous region in the past, which had the status of the duchy. Scientists investigate and compare the unique Samogitian heritage with other regions, poets are elaborate, the dialects of the dialects encourage us to explore the treasures of Samogitian spy, but to this day there are people who think that Samogitia should repeat the story, separate and become independent state ... Of course.
During the artistic research, the creators of the performance encountered Samogitian folk art masters and folklore fosters, who find it difficult to understand why the modern child no longer wanted to play in Birbyne. The authors of the Samogitia suggest that we need to understand where the value of those traditions lies in order to preserve, conserve and pass on to future generations. In order for ethnographic songs and dances to remain only a one -off, exotic performance at the Song Festival, and to become an integral part of everyday life, national identity, we must find a new way to talk about our past.
"We feel that our generation's attitude towards traditions and ethnography is very different from generations of parents and grandparents. We have doubts about how to protect and cherish, we want traditional elements to be adapted in the modern world. There is much more Samogitian legacy than just casserole and unique language. The dramaturgical basis of the performance-film is enhanced by the research of Lithuanian historians, ethnographers and publications about the history and traditions of Samogitia, and their analysis significantly expands our knowledge of what Samogitia is. However, this historical information will take on mystical and mythical forms on the theater scene, passing through a personal young person's experience filter. It is important for the creators of a fragmentary, mosaic performance to look for their own relationship with the place where Samogitia lives.
"My mother and grandmother are real Samogitians and speak Samogitian, but I grew up on Rubežius - in Šiauliai, in my daily life, Samogitian traditions are not so deep. Meanwhile, Eve grew up in Jonava, but has been living in Samogitia for a long time.
Not only Samogitians, but also Aukštaitija, Suwalki, Dzukai and Little Blinds are welcome in the performance - there will be relevant questions and unexpected discoveries for everyone.
