SV. SPY a two-part play based on Quentin Tarantino's The Frightful Eight
With the recent outbreak of the American Civil War, a group of suspicious characters get stuck in a roadside inn in the middle of nowhere during a blizzard. It suddenly turns out that the fateful passengers are diligently hiding their true identity, mutual relationships and their true purpose of being here, causing tension and mortal danger for all those stuck in this place. Will anyone survive the night of the spy?
The latest premiere of Aleksandar Špilevojas and one of the best Lithuanian rock bands "Colours of Bubbles" at Juozas Miltinis Drama Theater was inspired by the great love of director and musicians Quentin For Tarantino's work. Being interested in this artist, A. Špilevoj learned that one of his favorite films, "The Hateful Eight", was hanging in the balance when his script was leaked. It was decided to cancel filming, but so that the work would not go in vain, readings were arranged in one of the theaters in Los Angeles. After receiving extremely positive reviews, the artist decided to introduce a few changes and return to the making of the film. However, the experience in the theater infected the directors with the idea of creating a play someday. "After learning about this story, I realized that I would really like to see such a performance in the theater. Since I'm not sure if Q. Tarantin will ever implement this idea, I decided to create the play myself," A. Špilevoj says with a laugh.
Adapting the script to Lithuania, the director and the playwright had to work a lot with the text: to tighten everything so that there were no unnecessary scenes, unnecessary characters, changes in space, it was necessary to find ways to make the play meaningful and interesting for Lithuanian audiences today. "The film is about the American Civil War, after all, not all viewers are familiar with the 19th century. events in the USA, therefore it was necessary to adapt, change, create a new character, addressing the audience of the performance and creating new meanings of the performance with his monologues, which were not present in the film. That's how I wrote a play inspired by Q. Tarantino. In this material, together with the actors, we discover not America and the 19th century, but ourselves, our time, our country, our problems, our pressing questions, our unfulfilled hopes. "St. Speiga" is no longer Q. Tarantino's film, it is a story we are creating about a Man. Q. Tarantino set himself the task of creating a tragicomic story without a single positive hero. I don't want to say that all people on Earth are bad, but we have to admit that we are far from holy, so in this play we will see sinful humanity confronting the brightest ideas of humanism, love, freedom. I wonder who will win in the end?", says the director, who claims that this performance is the most complex he has ever created. In it, the action will take place in three layers: in the present time, when the rock band "Colours of Bubbles" is playing live, while the characters act as 19th century. for Americans and with a time-traveling middleman of history.
Premiere - 2022 January 28.
