Aleksandr Špilevoj THE ISLAND, WHICH IS NOT a two-part performance
For the first time in the history of the Panevėžys stage, the Juoz Miltinis Drama Theater and the Panevėžys Musical Theater united for a common goal - to tell the story of the legendary theater personality Juoz Miltinis and the beginning of the theater he created.
Today Juoz Miltinis, Donatos Banionis, Vaclovas Blėdis, Eugenijas Šulgaitė, The names of Regina Zdanavičiūtė and other Panevėžys theater legends are included in the Lithuanian cultural gold fund. However, few people know how it all started, how the founders of the Panevėžys Theater lived in the first years of their creation, how they became actors, how they survived the Second World War, and how the theater they cherished was formed, which they considered a sanctuary of their art and an island where they found refuge from external political pressure, cultural decay, and financial deprivation.
This story of the beginning of the Panevėžys Theater is surrounded by many myths. and legends. It is said that the young actors who came to Panevėžys and their teacher Juozas Miltinis were accommodated in the monastery on Marijonų street, where they really began to live as real artistic monks - they completely devoted themselves to art and continuous learning, without having the right to create families, communicate with the outside world, and have fun. Everything was shared - place of residence, food, money, all troubles and joys. Not everyone survived it, but those who succeeded became legends.
The creators of the show decided to look at those difficult times of theater creation and invite the audience to explore the myth of young, passionate idealists who were ready to sacrifice their lives for the sake of great art, which they considered to be the world's most important island. The island that doesn't exist. An island that they selflessly created in order not to fall, not to drown in the oppressive and suffocating everyday reality.
The performance features live music by the Panevėžys Musical Theater Orchestra.
2022. Albinas Kēleris has been nominated for the Golden Cross of the Stage in the actor category for the role of the Maestro in the play "Island that does not exist".
