Martin McDonagh THE LINEN BEAUTY QUEEN two-part play
- There are plenty of other equally dangerous things that could just as easily end. Or maybe it's even easier.
– What are they?
– Well, this stinky town of ours.
In a remote Irish town, in the mountains of Connemara, live two women - a skinny and ugly old girl Morinė and her sick, elderly mother Megė. Morine's day is filled with hatred for her mother, she can't stand Meg's hypochondria, manipulativeness, the fact that the woman can't cook soup or porridge, or that every morning she empties her night pot into the kitchen sink.
One day, the woman is invited to her uncle's farewell party by her neighbors, brothers Pat and Ray. Morinė decides to participate and spends the night with Pat, who was brought home. He becomes Morinė's first boyfriend, and at the same time a ticket to leave her manipulative mother and small town. However, Megė's manipulativeness and Morinė's complicated past complicate the woman's search for happiness. Will Maureen be able to break free from the clutches of her small town and monotonous life? Or maybe the reality is not quite what it seems?
According to the director Ieva Stundžytė: "My personal acquaintance with the playwright's work took place during my studies at LMTA, when I saw "Pillow" directed by Jonas Vaitkaus at the Youth Theater and "Queen of Line's Beauty" directed by Gytis during the tour of the Klaipėda Drama Theater in Vilnius. Arson.
I remembered not the performances themselves, but above all Martin McDonagh's dramaturgy and the impressions related to it - themes that are sharp to the point of discomfort, controversial dialogues written playfully and as if "with a light hand", paradoxical, but somehow very recognizable situations, and black to the point of absurdity humor.
Also, very important to me are women, both as actors, as characters, and in a broader sense. I consciously look for material for performances that is for women, and although not necessarily about women, but with women. In my opinion, the descriptions "beautiful" or "strong" for a woman are extremely ambiguous: beauty is being yourself, being free from other people's opinions, it is the feeling that you are needed, cared for, loved by yourself, and strength is the recognition of your fatigue, anger, grievances, the legalization of your entire emotional spectrum, the debunking of stereotypes. When creating a performance, I try to purify all this and, resisting the play, realize it."
The project is financed by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania.
