Piret Jaaks RITUALS OF PASSAGE two-part play
A young couple, surviving the loss of a baby, decide to move from the big city to the small town of Staunshed. They hope that such an "escape" will help them not only let go of the past faster, but also give them new strength to rebuild the crumbling relationship. But is it really still possible? Wasn't what happened to them a sign from someone? And is it a coincidence that they chose to come to Staunshed?
Staunshed is no ordinary town. So are the people who live here. It is a place where nature has a special role - through it, the other world speaks to us, it sends signs, warns, and transforms. Maybe it's a natural anomaly, maybe it's a cursed place, or maybe on the contrary, it's a purgatory, a transit station? Be that as it may, everything here has its own order, here every action has its reaction, here the laws of nature apply and nothing happens here by chance. So, what awaits the newcomers?
According to the director Paulius Pinigis: "The play deals with an extremely sensitive and complicated topic - a person in a liminal state. It is being "in between" - when the old model of life ceases to be valid, and the new one is not yet there. This is particularly sensitive when experiencing the loss of a loved one, divorce, trying to let go of unfulfilled life goals or dreams, hearing a diagnosis of a serious illness, or experiencing an identity or existential crisis. Being in a liminal state in one form or another is inevitable for humans, but the big question is how we should get out of it and move on with our lives. That's what this play is about. How not to stop? How to find a new way? How do you find the strength to move on? How to avoid getting stuck in a liminal state? And if you get stuck in it - does it mean still living or just waiting for everything to end?"
