Nikolaj Gogol THE CLOAK one part impression
Young director Kotryna Siaurusaitytė returns to the theater stage a Russian classic of Ukrainian origin called the godfather of Russian literature, Nikolai Gogol. Vladimir Nabokov called Gogol the best Russian writer, and his work influenced generations of authors, from Fyodor Dostoevsky to Mikhail Bulgakov. In his work, Gogol skilfully combined reality and fantasy, comedy and drama, realistic rendering of reality, criticism of the social system and existential reflections, as well as inserts of mysticism.
The main character of the short story "Cloak" is Akakijs Akakijevičius, a poor, lonely official in his sixties. He is a typical "little man" - quiet, withdrawn, rarely expressing his opinion. Constantly ridiculed for his manner and appearance, Akakievich decides to buy a new cloak, hoping that it will change his life and earn him the respect of those around him. The thought of new clothes takes over a person's thoughts, Akakijevic starts to think of the cloak as a close person. After finally realizing his dream, it starts to seem that Akakijevic's life is really changing, but it soon becomes clear that this was just the beginning of even greater troubles... An ordinary person is left alone to fight against injustice and is finally crushed by the cogs of the bureaucratic system.
As the director of the play, Kotryna Siaurusaitytė, says, "It seems that N. Gogol is experimenting with a person in 'The Cloak': he took him by the neck, held him up and threw him down. Gogol is a sad humorist: funny immediately turns into sad and vice versa. The lightness of the genre provides space for creativity and acting improvisations, transferring this material to the stage. This performance is a glimpse into an absurd world where a person can exist only thanks to fantasies and where the tragedy of a single and lonely person is revealed, conditioned by the indifference of the society around him and the attempt to systematize everything and everyone. With associative visual and sound solutions and, of course, healthy humor, we will try to immerse the audience in a surreal dreamscape."
