Aleksandr Špilevoj JONA two-part comedy
A. Špilevoj's latest play "Jona" consists of five separate stories that at first glance seem unrelated. However, more attentive viewers will soon notice that all these stories have one common detail - the characters of all of them find themselves in unexpected situations, stuck with people with whom they are neither comfortable nor pleasant to be with. A prostitute gets stuck in a room with her client and… her fiance, the director is locked in the theater with his disliked theater critic and a stagehand he can't stand himself…
No less intriguing are other stories and their characters who are stuck not only physically, but also mentally in their own internal traps. For some, psychological trauma experienced in childhood becomes such a trap, for others - their old false beliefs, for still others - addictions, feverish desires, an invincible sense of guilt. This is how all the characters of the play solve their very unfunny life problems in comic situations. Just like the prophet Jonah, whose story is described in the Holy Scriptures. Jonah, fleeing from God and from his destiny, was swallowed by a whale, inside which he spent three endless days. After solving the questions that haunted him, the prophet was miraculously freed from the death that awaited him in the stomach of the whale. And will the characters of the play be able to free themselves? Perhaps they and their lives will appear to the audience to be much more comical and fun than the story of the prophet Jonah described in the Bible. However, there is no doubt that the bright heroes of the play, stuck in the vicious circle of their problems, will remain in the memory of the audience for a long time. And who knows, maybe when the stage curtain comes down and the audience's laughter subsides, at least one of the spectators who has returned home will try to escape from the unstoppable circle of their endless activities, obligations, fears and weaknesses?
