Description:
The story of Mary of Egypt, shrouded in rumors and mysticism, is the point from which the creators of the play resist. This woman, who lived in Alexandria in the 4th century and was forced to sell her body, traveled to Jerusalem with the pilgrims. However, the gate to the Holy her grave was closed. After that she wandered for years in the desert, looking for repentance and peace.
What might the story of a 21st-century Mary of Egypt, wandering through an urbanized "desert" looking for liberation, look like? Has our society become more civilized with less violence? Has it become more empathetic? More lenient? More tolerant? Finally, less patriarchal?
Today Mary of Egypt can be every woman - mother, daughter, sister, wife, who daily maneuvers that sharp border between the holy and the sinful.
In this premiere, OKT/Vilnius City Theater will invite you to enter another unexplored and this time extremely uncomfortable, but extremely important X territory. "Holy" is the territory of abuse, where a woman who has suffered abuse and addiction all her life , finds the strength to get out of her crisis and choose a radically different direction in life. It is a play about a woman's survival in a radical patriarchal society, full of violence against a woman.
