Translation of the play from Latvian - VIKTORIJA JONKUTĖ
Performance "Flying Travolta" - for those who miss rich acting roles and good stories. It is an engaging story permeated with gentle irony and humor about each of us (not) making efforts to live our own lives, not those imposed by circumstances.
The play is presented by a young team of theater creators from neighboring Latvia. For the performance in Šiauliai, director Toms Treinis chose a play by contemporary Latvian author Artūrs Dicis, whose theme, according to the director, is equally relevant and understandable to both Latvian and Lithuanian audiences.
The play tells the story of the inhabitants of a remote village, whose daily life is drowned in personal vicissitudes. Enriched with everyday language, rich dialogues and humor, the play takes you to a small village forgotten by everyone, whose inhabitants, without trying to change anything or change themselves, push days similar to each other. In the center of the story is a young guy named Travolta, who in the village, because of his closed manner and strange habits, is considered by many to be simply "hit". Among other quirks, Travolta has an incomprehensible, dangerous and apparently completely pointless "hobby" of jumping out of nowhere in front of a car speeding through the countryside. One day, this seemingly absurd activity attracts the attention of journalists and events take a very unexpected turn...
It seems that Travolta, like all the other characters, is humble resigned to his fate, but in reality he carries a huge family secret, which, when revealed, reveals what lies beneath the rough surface of the play a shocking tragedy of love, guilt and its redemption. Travolta is like Latvia's Forest Gump, who tries to find a way out even in the most unfavorable circumstances.
In the play, the psychologically accurate acting of the actors, marked by a gentle spice of irony, plays the first violin. Each character in the play feels trapped in circumstances that, in their opinion, do not allow them to escape, to realize their dreams. As a result, each of them feels unhappy in their own way. But do they really sincerely want and try to change their lives?
The author of the play A. Dicis says that in this play he wanted to remind a very simple, but unfortunately often the forgotten truth that life is not something abstract - "it happens in us every sweet second and we ourselves are the real creators of our lives. There is no such place as "nowhere", where life seems to flow by without touching people".
Director Toms Treinis: "While staging this play, I think about human unfulfillment and reason for accepting fate. Through domestic and banal everyday life, the perspective of the characters' emptiness and self-destruction, I try to get closer to the essential clichés of thinking that influence such a life. They cannot be eliminated by empty words or "smart" words heard from others, self-pity or accusations, but by concrete steps, actions that must be taken in order to achieve change. Confrontation with fate is not pleasant for many, but it is the main condition for starting to change".
Premiere - 03/26/2023
