In the embassy of the bankrupt Duchy of Pontevedra in Paris, a party is held to celebrate the birthday of the dictator of the state - the duke. During the feast, the main focus is on Hana Glavari, a widow from Pontevedra, who inherited 20 billion from her banker husband. Hana Glavari is a fiery-tempered woman who intends to marry again. Officials at the Pontevedra embassy are alarmed because their principality is at risk of bankruptcy after the widow's billions "leak" to another country. The politicians agree that this cannot be allowed and find Hana's future husband - the secretary of the embassy in Paris, Count Danilo. It turns out that the count and the widow once knew each other. What's more, they were lovers until the marriage was opposed by Danila's uncle, because Hana was just an ordinary girl without money, background and prospects. Having broken up in a not-so-pretty way, now Hana and Danila are more interested in demonstrating their ambitions than rekindling their once burning feelings.

In the background of Paris, a real fiesta of intrigues, misunderstandings, failures and comedy is brewing. In the end, after many quarrels, the collapse of plans and the creation of new ones, everything falls into place, love triumphs, and the Duchy of Pontevedra is saved from its shameful disappearance from the map.

Since its premiere in Vienna in 1905, F. Lehar's operetta "The Merry Widow" has become one of the most successful and frequently staged operettas of all time.
