, a theatrical celebration full of music and pointed irony.
Commedia dell'arte, born in Italy in the 16th century, soon captivated almost all of Europe, and its influence spread centuries into the future. The secret of the unfading popularity and audience compliance lay in the masks - characters, each of which was easily recognizable both in the smallest village and in the most luxurious metropolis. The same characters kept spinning in ever-new whirlwinds of passions and local current events, creating a captivating combination of music, dance and wit for the audience.
The impressive commedia dell'arte did not overtake Lithuania either - it is true, several centuries late. The master of the genre and, let's not lie, Carlo Gozzi's deputy on Lithuanian soil - director Aidas Giniotis - will introduce our country's viewers to the fifth commedia dell'arte play!
C. According to the best traditions of the genre, Gozzi's "Turquoise Monster" is a bright, sensual, magical and hopeful tragicomedy, diving into the vortex of love and revenge, deceit and miracles, animated by improvising actors. The story unfolding in the mystical city of Nanjing could take place anywhere in the world, right here; the events that happen to the characters are universally recognizable and life-like, and here they are so refreshing and magical that boredom will never find a place in the audience.
"Turquoise Monster" and its masked characters invite especially the important thing is to see what lies deep within. This is an allegorical story about authenticity and self-imprisoning everyday masks, an invitation not to succumb to the charms of physical bodies and glossy covers, but rather to see what is seen when you close your eyes and open your heart.
