The forest bears witness, listens and helps. It protects, gives hope and shelter. The forest is full of links and echoes. And full of people hiding behind fallen trees, soaked through the swamp. And also people who bring them water and dry clothes. The forest is also full of birds and wild animals, which are less frightening at night than border guards and armed soldiers.
"Empire" is a performative installation inspired by the image of the moving forest in the tragedy "Macbeth" and the experiences of people migrating across the Polish-Belarus border and helping them. Shakespeare's text and the images of the humanitarian crisis at the border inspired the creative team to think about what survival strategies are when running, how nature can be beneficial to a person going through a crisis, how to help those fleeing, and how the government criminalizes gestures of solidarity. Finally, how much evil lies in a government that goes unpunished?
