Translated from French by Laima RAPŠYTĖ
The play "The Stranger" based on the Nobel Prize laureate The book by Albert Camus is staged by the Slovenian director Jernejus Lorenci, who is considered the most prominent figure of the contemporary Slovenian theater, as well as one of the most individual, insightful and innovative theater creators in Europe. a short stage in the life of the main character Mers, his trial. After refusing to lie to himself and others, disobeying the rules imposed by society and falling into a series of strange coincidences, Merso is finally condemned not for a possible crime, but for being different - a stranger.
Is modern society as tolerant as ever , which actively defends human rights, stands up for the weak, is it really tolerant of others? Are there some who are universally pitied and others who are not? Where is the difference? How would you feel, trying to explain the motives of your behavior in court, but receiving the same biased questions over and over again and realizing that no one really cares about your answers? Would you fight or surrender?
Director Jernejus Lorenzi claims that Merso is an iconic figure in twentieth-century literature and philosophy: “An outsider, a renegade, detached from everything and everyone. He observes the world from his shell. He has no position. Does his "detachment" have a philosophical meaning or is it just a way to endure? Mers a freak or a visionary after all?
How would we describe him today, in an age of quick judgments and black and white truth? Now that we are expected to have a clear opinion on everything, always firmly for or against? Either "for" or "against" - for us it has become like an all-summarizing commandment of God, the new catechism: for/against, or/or. We live in a time where we are almost proud of our generalized and simplified view of everything. When we are furious, irritated, so angry that we feel like we are about to explode. When we are the last ones to cling to our truth, fight for our exclusive right, the only real one? We all wave our little rights flags. A sea of flags, banners - that's who we are! And little by little we are drowning in stupidity, which more and more menacingly turns into real blood."
In addition to numerous awards in Slovenia, Lorenci has also won a number of awards abroad: the New Theater Reality Award (2017) and the award of the Belgrade International Theater Festival (BITEF) (2013) are among the most important. In his work, the director refuses the classical adaptation, and this performance will be no exception. Camus' novel "The Stranger" will become the dramaturgical axis of the performance, but during the creative process with the actors and the creative group, other relevant texts, today's contexts, personal experiences of the creators will be used, and all this will turn into an original and relevant treatment of the novel.
