And this will help him to raise his status in society, climb the career ladder and thus get the desired attention of his beloved woman. Calculation and gambling are fighting inside Germano. The countess is a mystical character in the play. She is both German's victim and the force with which German plays, in the beginning creating his game strategy, and in the end becoming a victim of his own game.
