Works used in the performance, translated from the ancient Greek language: Plato's "Feast" and "Socrates' Apology" (translated by Merkelis Račkauskas), "Valstybė" (translated by Jonas Dumčius) , "Gorgias" (translated by Tatjana Aleknienė), as well as fragments from Xenophon's "Memoirs of Socrates" (translated by Vanda Kazanskienė), "The Frogs" by Aristophanes (translated by Antanas Dambrauskas).
In 2019, Motiejus Ivanauskas won the Young Developers Platform competition organized by LNDT. The theme he proposed for the theater - to resurrect Plato's "Dialogues" on stage (Plato recorded the thoughts of his teacher, Socrates) - appeared to the commission to be worthy of further development.
Motiejus Ivanauskas, who recently graduated from acting at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theater, says: which proves that the "golden mean" is often important in life. In other words, a balance between two opposite poles. This is true in psychology, in politics, and in the structure of a new play. In "Dialogues" the attention is drawn to the fact that Socrates' teachings seem to obviously call for the pursuit of "eternal values-virtues" - the development of wisdom, moderation, and will - but at the same time one can feel the "free" atmosphere of ancient Greece, the ironic attitude of Socrates towards himself, his interlocutors and to self-proposed reflections. This immediately sets a favorable mood, because Socrates does not consider himself omniscient, but simply brings certain problems to the surface, which then become obvious to everyone."
Socrates - the main character of "Dialogues", played by Vytautas Anužis - to his contemporaries he said directly what he thought about them and their actions, and he supported his reasoning with strong arguments in such a way that the interlocutors were often disappointed, because they realized that they could no longer object. However, Motiejus Ivanauskas says that now he really does not want to create an instructive work using Socrates' wisdom as a standard of truth (Socrates himself would probably not agree with this, as he repeatedly said: "I know that I know nothing"). Much more effective is the principle when the episodes are simply allowed to "float" among the audience, leaving the opportunity to laugh, object, perhaps - to agree.
The form of "dialogues" is especially suitable in the theater. As you know, Socrates, when talking to people, asked precise questions that led to the fact that the interlocutor clearly saw that he was contradicting himself and had to admit that he was wrong. The slightly archaic manner of these dialogues may sound exotic, but it gives an opportunity to see, and when seen, to highlight the comic side of Socrates' conversations. Debesys".
