Social research. Comedy in two parts (N-16)
Based on the play by Gabrielė Labanauskaitė
The performance of the Vilnius State Small Theater "Tinder Dates" based on the play of the same name by Gabrielė Labanauskaitė ( directors: Gabrielė Tuminaitė, Stas Žyrkov (Ukraine) and Kirilas Glušajevas, playwright Gabrielė Labanauskaitė) is a kind of social research that focuses on the relationship problems and exercises of modern young people - the so-called millennial generation - specifically - on the extremely popular "Tinder" dating site app as a phenomenon. The play features actors of the young generation (ages 24-30) who embody characters of their age. The central theme of the play is, of course, love: how to find it and what we generally call love these days; how and when to love, when we are all so busy, in a hurry, on the run, we devote a lot of time to self-realization, career, work, and we leave our feelings aside, postpone them? Questions are raised: why is finding a loved one more the exception than the rule? Why don't young people who really want and want the same things talk to each other? Why is meeting, being together often prevented by fear? According to director G. Tuminaitė, in essence, the play reveals the intersection of love and great fear. "There is a lot of pursuit of love here - after all, we all want a one-day flirtation, we want to be liked, to be in a company that we like - basically, we all want hedonistic things," says the director.
"The idea and desire to write a play about Tinder "I have nurtured a dating app for a long time, but I realized that my experience alone is not enough, I need to involve more people in this idea. Therefore, I was very happy when dir. Gabrielė Tuminaitė invited to create a play together. It's great that we managed to realize this idea of ours and an interesting laboratory process took place", says playwright G. Labanauskaitė.
The play was written during rehearsals and afterwards, based on the personal feedback of the actors, the playwright herself, as well as people who use the Tinder app. experience and impressions. "In trying to uncover the topic, I read many books, articles about this app, and also listened and read many real testimonies, including members of the creative team. I asked my Facebook friends to share their insights, and I received quite a few stories and examples of correspondence. In fact, I see the Tinder app simply as a way to get to know each other. I think that at different times and ways of getting to know each other were different. And that's neither good nor bad, it's just a natural change and the means of establishing a relationship are changing. And people, like everywhere in the world, are very diverse: happy, unhappy, single, and not single. By using this app, everyone finds what they are looking for: someone wants to be a savior and finds the one who needs to be saved, and someone may not be ready for a relationship yet, but is already looking for one..." - says the playwright.
According to G. Labanauskaitė, the performance does not have a coherent narrative, a single plot line with a climax - the dramaturgy here is created from individual episodes, but all of them talk about people's search for each other. According to the director G. Tuminaitė, these are short stories that are not necessarily related to each other, but in each etude, no matter how comic, absurd or phantasmagorical, it is about meetings, about how that other person changes us. "K. G. Jung's idea that people are like chemical elements is very applicable here: if you connect two, even for a short time, at least for a moment, they already change each other," says the director.
The play features 8 characters and the hosts of the podcast. Thus, the play consists of eight dating stories of young people. This is not only about the moment of acquaintance, but also about how to start dating, how to clarify expectations; exposes the dangers and fears faced by users of the Tinder app. "It was important for me that people get to know not only the principles of how this app works, but also learn certain rules for using it. For this, I used the hosts of the podcast, who teach how to get to know each other, what to watch out for, when to answer the first messages, when to decide to meet, what steps should be taken before meeting live so that you are not disappointed later, etc. t.," reveals G. Labanauskaitė.
The playwright says she believes that communication heals, and here the form (live or virtual) is not so important as the connection that connects people. However, being alone and lonely is not so bad, it's just hard to endure it for long. But solitude can actually be rewarding. Well, if it is depressing, then maybe flashing on the screen without leaving home is the solution?...
