Jo Strømgren: The door separates "here" and " elsewhere". There is a very strong belief that there will always be something better on the other side. This belief makes people move. Somewhere in Europe, in a land divided by national borders, languages, religions and geographical barriers, the phenomenon of migration has always existed. It is a way to survive and a way to resist, an opportunity to start life anew, and also to burn bridges, to leave everything behind. The performance "Doors" travels through different historical periods and regions through movement and dance in order to see the patterns that have always existed, the reasons for migration and how it changes in different nations.
People are always limited by their environment - home, school, workplace, country, restaurant we can visit, person we love or pretend to love.
Belonging to a certain environment is wonderful. , especially if your neighbor can't go to restaurants. Things like this make us smile. But when another neighbor comes home one day with a canoe on the roof of his car, we start to feel miserable. And when we see that smile on our neighbor's face, we definitely crave a canoe. Even if we really don't like being in nature.
The performance "Doors" aims to reveal the most disappointing and destructive features of people through a naive and associative look at a group of people separated by a wall. Since everything always looks more interesting on the other side, the narrow door becomes an important threshold for change. But since no one is satisfied with what they have, the search for something better becomes a never-ending process. Are we free people, maybe even charming and creative, or are we still hopelessly attached to our habits, like Pavlov's dogs?
Biography of Jo Strømgren
Norway-born Jo Strømgren (b. 1970) is one of the most famous Scandinavian choreographers. According to Jo Strømgren Kompani's page, Jo had a typical Norwegian childhood, growing up surrounded by wild nature, social democratic values and scary tales of trolls. Born in Trondheim in the central part of the country, the choreographer spent a lot of time in the tropics, where his parents moved for work. This early enrichment of the local identity with the traveler's experiences had an impact on his professional activities, both in terms of themes, variations in genres, and interest in different languages.
After finishing school, Jo could not decide what to study. : chemical engineering or Russian language. However, almost by chance, the application submitted to the National Ballet School in Oslo was accepted, so Jo made an impulsive decision.
Due to skepticism towards academic methods and very poor attendance, Jo Strømgren did not graduate. neither classical ballet nor choreography. Nevertheless, he began a very successful career as a dancer, which led him to both choreography and stage direction. The literary ambitions nurtured in his youth developed and eventually turned into a permanent work as a playwright (he himself also writes a play for a performance at the Lithuanian National Drama Theater). Although these three directions are identified as his main activities, Jo also creates scenography and light design. The artist's works in cinema should also be mentioned - both in front of and behind the camera. Interdisciplinarity is one of the most striking features of this artist, this way of his creation shows an innate interest in the comprehensive disclosure of history.
In 1998, he founded the dance troupe "Jo Strømgren Kompani", which became its artistic director and developed a unique personal style, which mixes theater, dance, puppetry, cinema, live music and absurd language.
As a choreographer, he is invited to various theaters - create both classical and contemporary performances. As a theater director, he mostly works in national and city theaters in Scandinavia, where he mostly stages works by Henrik Ibsen. As a playwright, he has written a number of plays for the theater and screenplays for the cinema. He is a member of the Norwegian Writers Guild.
Jo Strømgren is also currently an associate choreographer at the Norwegian National Ballet.
